PUPPY CARE TIPS!

YOUR NEW PUPPY - PUPPY CARE TIPS

Things to do when you pick up your new puppy at the airport:

1) If your puppy seems fatigued or stressed from the trip, put 2 drops of honey on the tip of your finger, and gently massage it into his gums.  Do not give him more than 2 drops.

Another option is to use Nutrical, which you can buy at a pet supply store.  When you get the pup to the car from the airport, you can give the pup a small amount of
Nutrical (1/2") on your finger, and gently place it on his tongue.

2) Offer him water after the flight.  You can also use a syringe without a needle and gently squirt a little drink into his mouth to make sure he receives a drink.  This
ensures he has fluids after his trip.

3) Make sure he is not exposed to extended periods of hot temperatures.  (Do not leave him in the car, or in a hot room).

4) Make sure he is not exposed to extended periods of cold temperatures.

5)  When you get home, give him some time to adjust to his new surroundings.  You can expect him to need a few days to acclimate to his new surroundings.

6) We feed Science Diet Small Bites AND Eukanuba Puppy Chiot Small Breed Petite Race and also Royal Canin Mini Yorkshire Terrier 28 Formula Dog Food. When they are just learning to eat dry dog food I start out using Eukanuba Puppy Chiot Small Breed Petite Race SMALL BITES because it's very small round dry dog kibble that is easy for them to chew. I sometimes add a little water to moisten it and I also use SCIENCE DIET SMALL BITES they seem to really love these 2 I just listed and it's also VETERINARIAN RECOMMENDED! I always leave 2 big dog containers with one of the containers having the Science Diet in it and then putting the Eukanauba Puppy Small Bites in the other that way they can choose which one they want to eat. These 2 dry dog foods is the very best dog foods I have found that they really love. I also use Pedigree Puppy Canned Puppy Food when they are just learning to eat, but the dry food is always in their doggie bowls for them to get to as well.

If I happen to run out of either of these 2 dry dog food brands I have used Purina Puppy Chow until I get to PETSMART to pick up what I'm out of. It might be a good idea to keep him on this feed, and not change until he has had time to get settled into his new home.  If you do change food, taper off, and slowly introduce the other. But I highly recommend the Science Diet Puppy AND Eukanuba Puppy Chiot SMALL BITES! You really can't go wrong with these 2 brands because MY PUPPIES LOVE IT!

When my Yorkie females are pregnant I also use the Science Diet Puppy, and Eukanuba Puppy Dry food as well, as it keeps them from loosing alot of calcium while being pregnant.

I ALSO have a big container that sets on the kitchen floor that is full of FRESH CLEAN WATER so that they don't run out of water. I often clean their water container even when they have not finished drinking up the container of water because as it sets the bowl can and will get slimy in the bottom of the bowl,,,SO MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR PUPPYS WATER BOWL CLEAN WITH FRESH TASTING DRINKABLE WATER AT ALL TIMES!

7) Offer him at least 4 small meals a day.  If he isn't eating, then you may need to coax him.  It is important that he eat to keep his blood sugar stable.  If he won't eat his dry food, a heaping teaspoonful of canned tuna or chicken on his dry food is also good to feed him.  Remember he is still a baby, and he has had a long trip.  He needs your help in adjusting to his new home.

8) Frequently offer him the chance to go to the bathroom.  If he goes, praise him, but do not punish him for accidents, because he won't understand.

9) Make sure water is available to him at all times.

10) His crate is a great place for him to sleep at night and to take naps.  Keep it cozy with a blanket, and keep water and food available with dishes that attach to the side at all times.

11) Also available at pet stores are puppy pads for him to use for potty training, and little portable fences to put around his crate.  This way you can keep him safe and comfortable at all times.   Another option is a small animal cage with a puppy pad underneath for during the day when he can't be watched.  A baby blanket to sleep on will help keep him cozy and comfy.  Food and water dishes attached to the side are convenient, so he always has access to food and water, and prevents spills.

12) Inspect your home for anything that the puppy might not need to get into to.  Puppies go through a period of teething and chewing, that can damage your property, and be hazardous to them as well.   Electrical cords should be put out of his reach, or he should be carefully supervised when he is not in his crate, so that he can't be hurt.

More Information on Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar):
Hypoglycemia occurs mainly in toy breeds of dogs between six to sixteen weeks of age.  Often it is brought on by stress.  It is imperative that you be aware of some of the signs of the onset of an attack of hypoglycemia.  The first signs are those of depression, weakness, and/or loss of appetite.  They can collapse and/or go into a seizure or may be noticeably confused, disoriented, become drowsy at unusual times, shiver and/or stagger about.

Hypoglycemia can occur without warning when a puppy is placed in a new home or while being shipped.  It might appear if the puppy misses a meal, becomes chilled, becomes exhausted from too much playing or has a digestive upset.  These upsets place an added strain on the energy reserves of the liver and bring on the symptoms.

Most dogs outgrow this condition.

Treatment of Hypoglycemia:  Treatment is directed at restoring blood levels of glucose.  Begin at once.   If you suspect hypoglycemia, give him corn syrup, honey, or Nutrical.  Nutrical is available at most pet supply stores.  If he has these symptoms and does not improve, take him to the vet.

Don't let this information cause any undue worry or stress.  We just want you to be informed so that you can watch for symptoms, and be able to act quickly if it does occur.  As long as the pup has plenty of food and water, and keeps his blood sugar level stable, he may never experience any problems.

Vet Check ups, Shots and Dewormings:  Your puppy is up to date on all shots and dewormings.  Be sure and keep it that way.  We will be sending you his records, please take them with you when you visit your vet.  If your puppy looks sick, and will not eat or drink take him to the vet immediately.  Do not NEVER EVER WAIT around thinking it will get better in a few days because you could very well loose that precious baby puppy you have spent alot of money on.
